Cooperative Driver Testing Program (CDTP) for Teen Road Test: Your Path to a License with Chicago’s #1 Driving School

Navigating the journey to a driver’s license is a significant milestone for any teen, and at Chicago’s #1 Driving School, we’re dedicated to making this process seamless, efficient, and supportive. As part of Illinois’ Cooperative Driver Testing Program (CDTP), we offer teens an exclusive, convenient option to complete their behind-the-wheel road test in a familiar, comfortable environment. This program empowers certified driving instructors to administer the official road test, allowing teens to bypass long DMV wait times and making us the best option for teen road testing in Illinois.

Requirements for Teen Road Test Eligibility

To ensure a comprehensive education and prepare teens for the road, the Cooperative Driver Testing Program requires the following:

Driver Education Course Completion:

Classroom Training: Students must complete a minimum of 30 hours of driver education classroom instruction.

Behind-the-Wheel Training: At least 6 hours of practical behind-the-wheel training is required.

Academic and Instructor Approval:

Grades: Students must earn a final grade of A or B to demonstrate knowledge and readiness.

Parental/Guardian Consent: Parental or legal guardian approval is required for teens to participate.

Road Test Administration: The behind-the-wheel test is administered by state-certified instructors, following regulations set by the Office of the Secretary of State.
After successfully completing the driving school’s course and the instructor-administered test, we’ll send the results directly to the Illinois Secretary of State. Once the student turns 16 and has held an instruction permit for at least nine months, they’re eligible to apply for their official driver’s license.

Here’s what they’ll need:

  • 50-hour Driving Certificate: Documenting supervised practice, including 10 hours of night driving.
  • Written Parental Consent: Written approval from a parent or legal guardian.
  • Identification: Including proof of full legal name, Social Security number, and Illinois residency.

In most cases, students won’t need to retake the road exam at the DMV, but the Secretary of State may require a road test to maintain program quality.

Parental Consent Requirements

Parents play an essential role in a teen’s journey to becoming a responsible driver. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Written Consent: Parents or legal guardians must provide written approval at the time of license application.
  • 50-Hour Practice Requirement: This includes a minimum of 10 hours of night driving to ensure well-rounded practice.
  • Consent Revocation: At any time before the teen’s 18th birthday, a parent or guardian may revoke consent by contacting the Secretary of State. Driving privileges will only be restored upon reaching age 18 or when consent is reestablished.

Why Choose Us? The Benefits of Testing with Chicago’s #1 Driving School

Opting for our road testing services offers unparalleled advantages:

  • Ease of Appointment: Teens can visit the DMV with an “ID Card Service” appointment, which is typically more accessible than the “In-Car” testing appointments.
  • Convenient Vehicle Options: We offer the flexibility of using one of our school’s vehicles or a student’s own car.

Qualifications for the Teen Road Test

Our CDTP-approved road test is available to all students under 18 who meet these qualifications:

  • Age: Applicants must be under 18 years old.
  • Educational Completion: Students must provide proof of an A or B grade in both the classroom and behind-the-wheel sections of driver education.
  • No Prior State DMV Testing Attempts: If a teen has already attempted and failed a road test at a DMV facility, future attempts must be conducted at the DMV.

Adult Driver Education

Adult Driver Education Helps You Get Rolling Toward a Driver’s License

If you’re between ages 18 and 20 and you didn’t take Driver Education in high school, Nova’s 6-hour Adult Driver Education (ADE) class might be for you.  Since mid-2014, Illinois has required first-time driver’s license applicants (without any prior Driver Education background) to complete a six-hour Adult Driver Education course in order to earn a license before age 21.

During Nova’s class, students learn about safe driving strategies; the Rules of the Road; the process for earning a driver’s license in Illinois; the dangers of distracted driving; the risks posed by driving under the influence; and ways to drive safely at night and in adverse weather conditions, among other topics. Justin R., pictured here, was among the students who did an outstanding job in Nova’s ADE class on Sunday, October 2.

Classes are held on specific Sundays of the month at Nova’s main branches at 2036 and 2058 N. Western Avenue as well as at Nova’s Hyde Park branch at 5503 S. Harper Ave in Chicago.  To learn more about Nova’s Adult Driver Education course, visit us on the Web at https://novadriving.com/our-programs/written-exam-instruction-permit/ (scroll down to see the “Adult Driver Education” link) or call us at (773) 489-2712.

Policymakers in Illinois are committed to ensuring that young drivers have the skills necessary to safely operate a motor vehicle.  These skills include a solid knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle operation, and motorists’ responsibilities.  Illinois requires first-time driver’s license applicants (between 18 and 20) to complete a six-hour Adult Driver Education course if they did not take driver education through their high school or through a driving school.

The students pictured here recently completed Nova’s one-day, six-hour Adult Driver Education course.    During the class, students learned about safe driving strategies; the Rules of the Road; the process for earning a driver’s license in Illinois; the dangers of distracted driving; the risks posed by driving under the influence; and ways to drive safely at night and in adverse weather conditions, among other topics.
