NDS may, at its own discretion, change course schedules and locations and, on rare occasions, cancel a course. You understand that enrollment is taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. NDS may dismiss any student who has not paid tuition, in full, in accordance with our tuition policies or who, in NDS’s opinion, is disruptive during driving lessons.

INSTRUCTION PERMIT: Each student must have a valid driver's instruction permit in his or her possession when engaged in vehicle operation, if you forget a permit on the day of the lesson $45 rescheduling fee will be assessed.

DRIVING TEST: Behind the wheel instruction is private. However, if you choose to take the Road Test without a lesson attached, you may be scheduled with an instructor that is already going to the Secretary of state with another student. When scheduling for a Road exam our licensed instructor will determined if you are a safe driver able to be placed in line for the exam. If instructor determines you are not a safe driver a lesson will take place in lieu of the Road Test.  Keep in mind that we will provide home pick up only if road test is combined with a lesson. If you don't require home pick up you will be set up according to our instructor's schedule to meet at the Secretary of State or at the public transportation nearest to the Secretary of State.

SERVICE AT THE SECRETARY OF STATE: Two hours are allotted for the Road Test including drop off. Any additional time spent at the Secretary of State due to delays in line or other factors, including the need to resolve documentation, eligibility or license issues will be charged at an hourly rate of $50 ($50 minimum). Upon departure from the Secretary of State, students can choose to be dropped off at the nearest CTA transportation station (rather than at home) to avoid incurring the additional $50 per hour charge when the total time spent for the Road Test exceeds two hours. Students can choose to reschedule the Road Test for another time so they can resolve issues independently but will still be required to pay $45 to re-schedule.

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices: Use of cell phones and/or any other portable electronic devices during driving lessons is strictly prohibited. Additionally, students are asked to turn off/put on silent all cell phones and/or any other portable electronic devices during driving lessons. Students who do not follow these guidelines will be excused from the lesson and no attendance/BTW lesson credit will be given for such dates occurrence.

CANCELLATION Policy: Appointments with Nova Driving School (NDS) will be confirmed by email. It is the responsibility of the student to give NDS a 24 business hours’ advance notice for any cancellations to avoid a last-minute cancellation fee of $45 per two (2) hour lesson.

IN-LESSON CANCELLATION: A lesson is considered to have begun when the instructor arrives at the location of the lesson at the scheduled time. The lesson may then be cancelled if the student chooses not to take the lesson, is not wearing adequate footwear, lack of sleep, intoxication, medication, or if the student refuses to follow the instructors directions (especially and including reckless student behavior.) A lesson so cancelled shall be considered fulfilled as far as the obligations of NOVA.

REFUNDS: If student/customer requests a refund prior to the first lesson we will under discretion process the refund on a case to case basis. 30% processing fee will be applied to all refunds. If you choose to discontinue your package at any point student/customer will have credit for a 1 year period, from date purchased. If you decide to stop all lessons with NDS, credit may be use for a friend/family member of your choice. Note: If Instructor decides to stop a lesson while in progress, due to student not properly listening/following instructions, student will not be refunded for that lesson.

FOOTWEAR POLICY (during driving lessons): Students will not be permitted to wear sandals or open-toed shoes of any kind during driving lessons. Shoes must be worn during driving lessons and must cover the entire foot from toe to heel (close-toed shoes). IT’S NOT PERMITTED TO WEAR SANDALS OR HEELS DURING YOUR DRIVING LESSON.

In addition to all terms and conditions TEENS will also abide by the following:

No partial or full refund will be given to students dropped as a result of being absent for more than 4 classroom sessions, including behind the wheel lessons.

RE-ENROLLMENT FEE: If a student wishes to enroll in a classroom course section other than the classroom course section for which s/he originally register, s/he has up to the second day after the original class began to re-enroll in another available classroom course section. There will be a re-enrollment fee of $45 to re-assign the student in a different classroom course section.

SCHEDULING BEHIND THE WHEEL: All enrollment and registration forms must be turned in and payment must be received in full in order to schedule behind the wheel (BTW) lessons. BTW lessons must be completed within 1 year from purchase date. After one year of purchase date, the remaining hours will be billed at a regular behind the wheel hourly rate.

CANCELLATION NOTICE FOR TEEN PROGRAMS: When scheduling a driving lesson, it is required to give at least a 24-hour notice during business hours to cancel or reschedule any scheduled behind-the-wheel lessons. Students unable to attend a lesson who do not cancel or reschedule their lessons at least 24 hours in advance will be charged $45 cancellation fee. All canceled lessons must be rescheduled in order for the student to complete the required driving time mandated by Secretary of State. The Student will receive confirmation email for any lesson scheduled with Nova.

CHANGING CLASS SECTIONS—RE-ENROLLMENT FEE: If a student wants to switch from their classroom section to another available section, they must inform Nova before the beginning of their third classroom session. They may switch to a session that has not yet begun but cannot switch to a class session that has already started. There is a $45 re-enrollment fee.

CHANGING CLASS SECTIONS—RE-ENROLLMENT FEE EXCEPTIONS

      1. If there is a program being taught Mondays/Wednesdays, and another program being taught Tuesdays/Thursdays, and both programs started the same week, a student in either program may switch to the other without paying a re-enrollment fee so long as the student requests the change before the third classroom session.
      2. If there are two programs being taught Mondays/Wednesdays at different times of the day, a student in either program may switch to the other without paying a re-enrollment fee so long as the student requests the change before the third classroom session.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS/ABSENCES: Students may miss a total of four classroom sessions without penalty, although they will have to make up each of those sessions in order to pass the class. If a student misses a fifth session, they will be dropped from the program, even if they have made up the other four sessions. They may re-enroll in the program at a later date for a $45 re-enrollment fee. No refund will be given for students who are dropped from a program for missing more than four sessions.

TARDINESS: Students are considered tardy if they are not in the classroom when the class starts. If a student is more than 15 minutes late, they will be marked absent. If the student completes the required activities for the day, they do not have to make up the class, but it still counts against their four allowed absences. If the student is unable to complete all of the required activities for the day, they will need to attend a make-up class.

EARLY DEPARTURE FROM CLASS: Students may not leave a class early unless Nova receives written permission from the parent(s) or from a legal guardian. A text from the parent to the student, made from the phone number Nova has on file for the parent(s), is acceptable.

MAKE-UP CLASSES: Students who miss a classroom session must make up the missed session. Once their classroom course ends, the students have one week from the last class to complete any outstanding make-up work.  Nova cannot certify a student whose work is incomplete, and Nova must certify each student with the Secretary of State in order for that student to acquire a driver’s license. It may take a student anywhere from half an hour to an hour to make up each absence's work.

Students are welcome to make up any missed classes during Nova’s weekly make-up class on Fridays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at any Nova location, but they must alert the Teen Programs coordinator that they will be coming to the Friday make-up session by emailing teenprograms@novadriving.com. If a student cannot come to a Friday make-up session, they can schedule their own make-up session by emailing the Teen Programs coordinator at teenprograms@novadriving.com.

MAKE-UP CLASSES—WRITTEN EXAM EXCEPTION: If students miss the written exam practice date during their classroom course, they may not use a standard Friday make-up class to complete it. Instead, they will need to attend a written-exam practice in another session in progress. The student or parent must contact teenprograms@novadriving.com and state explicitly that the make-up session is for the written exam preparation class. The student may be added to an Adult Driver’s Ed written exam class, or to an upcoming Teen Program written exam class. If neither of these options are convenient, the student may schedule a one-on-one independent study for written exam preparation at an $90 fee.

THE WRITTEN EXAM AT THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE: Once the student has completed their written exam practice day in the classroom (the fourth day of class), they will be issued an envelope with some of the documents necessary to take to any office of the Secretary of State in order to take their written exam for their driver’s permit. At that point, the student is eligible to take the exam for their permit. A full list of eligible/required documents can be found here at the Secretary of State’s Office website.

If a parent cannot accompany a student to the SOS to take the written exam and obtain their permit, Nova Driving School offers a chaperone service. Students or parents may visit Nova’s Teen Programs webpage and scroll down to “Teen Permit Chaperone Service” to schedule their trip. Parents sending their teens to the SOS with Nova’s Chaperone Service must sign the permit form.

NDS requires a copy of each student's permit. Students should bring their permit to class so that the teacher can make a copy. Once the student has earned their permit, they may schedule their Behind-the-Wheel lessons. If a parent cannot accompany a student to the Secretary of State to take their road exam to obtain their driver's license, then the parent must download, fill out, and send the Affidavit/Consent for Minor to Drive document with their student to the SOS.

REFUNDS: NDS will process refund requests made prior to the first lesson at their discretion, and on a case-by-case basis.

Students have 30 days from the package purchase date to request a refund. A 30% fee is applied to all program refunds made during this 30-day period. If a student decides to stop all lessons with NDS after the 30-day deadline has passed, payment cannot be refunded. However, the program credit remains available for one year from its purchase date, and students may choose to transfer the credit to a friend or family member.

PAYMENT REFUSAL/LACK OF FUNDS: In the event that the method of payment is returned for insufficient funds, the student or parent(s) will be responsible for the entire balance, as well as for any bank fees incurred by NDS due to payment refusal. In the event that the balance is not paid in full by 90 days, the student or parent(s) will be responsible for all billed charges, collection costs, and reasonable attorney fees.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS/ABSENCES FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES OF ONE STUDENT OR OF TWO TO NINE STUDENTS: Nova encourages students who are doing an independent study to do their best to not miss any sessions. The program allows a maximum of two absences. If a student misses a third session, they will be dropped from the program, even if they have made up the other two sessions. They may re-enroll in a regular program, or they may set up another Independent Study by paying the program's regular prices in full. No refunds will be given to students who are dropped due to excessive absenteeism.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS/ABSENCES FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES OF TEN OR MORE STUDENTS: Nova encourages students who are doing an independent study to do their best to not miss any sessions. The program allows a maximum of four absences. If a student misses a fifth session, they will be dropped from the program, even if they have made up the other four sessions. They may re-enroll in a regular program, or they may set up another Independent Study by paying the program's regular prices in full. No refunds will be given to students who are dropped due to excessive absenteeism.

EARLY DEPARTURE FROM CLASS FOR ALL INDEPENDENT STUDY STUDENTS: Students may not leave a class early unless Nova receives written permission from the parent(s) or from a legal guardian. A text from the parent to the student, made from the phone number Nova has on file for the parent(s), is acceptable.

MAKE-UP CLASSES FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES OF ONE TO NINE STUDENTS: Students who miss a classroom session must make up the missed session.

There are two make-up options for students in an Independent Study class comprised of one to nine students:

  1. Students are welcome to make up any missed classes during Nova’s weekly make-up class on Fridays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at any Nova location, but they must email teenprograms@novadriving.com to inform Nova that they will bee attending. If a student cannot come to a Friday make-up session, they can schedule a separate make-up session by sending an email to the same address.
  2. If a student or their parents want their teen to have a specific teacher for a make-up session, the fee is $45 per missed hour. To schedule a make-up session with a teacher, please find a date and time and notify the Teen Program so the make-up session can be created. If there is more than one student in the Independent Study and both cancel the same class, the students have the option of splitting the cost of the make-up class.

MAKE-UP CLASSES FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES OF TEN OR MORE STUDENTS: Students who miss a classroom session must make up the missed session.

MAKE-UP CLASSES—WRITTEN EXAM EXCEPTION FOR ALL INDEPENDENT STUDY STUDENTS: If students miss the written exam practice date during their classroom course, they may not use a standard Friday make-up class to complete it. If neither of these options are convenient, the student may schedule a one-on-one independent study for written exam preparation at an $99 fee.

THE WRITTEN EXAM AT THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR ALL INDEPENDENT STUDY STUDENTS: Once the student has completed their written exam practice day in the classroom (the fourth day of class), they will be provided with a permit form, which a parent or guardian must sign before they go to take their written exam at the Secretary of State's office.

Each student is required to bring several other documents to the Secretary of State's office in order to take their exam. A full list of eligible/required documents can be found here at the Secretary of State’s Office website.

NDS requires a copy of each student's permit. Students should bring their permit to class so that the teacher can make a copy. Once the student has earned their permit, they may schedule their Behind-the-Wheel lessons.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES OF ONE STUDENT: All class session cancellations must be made at least 48 hours before the class is scheduled to begin. If a student cancels a class  with less than 48 hours' notice, there is a cancelation fee of $90 per every two hours cancelled.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES OF TWO TO NINE STUDENTS: If the student will attend a Friday make-up session between 3:30 and 5:30 on the Friday after the cancelled class, there will be no fee incurred for the cancellation. If all of the students cancel a class with less than 48 hours' notice, there is a cancelation fee of $90 per every two hours cancelled.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES OF TEN OR MORE STUDENTS: If the student will attend a Friday make-up session between 3:30 and 5:30 on the Friday after the cancelled class, there will be no fee incurred for the cancellation. If all of the students cancel a class with less than 48 hours' notice, there is a cancelation fee of $90 per every two hours cancelled.

If parents want their teen to have a teacher present for a make-up session, there will be a fee of $45 per missed hour. To schedule a make-up session with a teacher, please contact the Teen Program so they can schedule it. The students have the option of splitting the cost of the make-up class. Talk to the teen supervisor/manager if you need help.

REFUNDS FOR ALL INDEPENDENT STUDY STUDENTS: NDS will process refund requests made prior to the first lesson at their discretion, and on a case-by-case basis.

PAYMENT REFUSAL/LACK OF FUNDS FOR ALL INDEPENDENT STUDY STUDENTS: In the event that the method of payment is returned for insufficient funds, the student or parent(s) will be responsible for the entire balance, as well as for any bank fees incurred by NDS due to payment refusal. In the event that the balance is not paid in full by 90 days, the student or parent(s) will be responsible for all billed charges, collection costs, and reasonable attorney fees.

DOCUMENTS: All registration documents must be turned in to Nova before any teen can start their Behind-The-Wheel lessons.

SCHEDULING BEHIND-THE-WHEEL LESSONS: All enrollment and registration forms must be turned in, payment must be made in full, and the student must have received their permit from the Secretary of State’s (SOS) office before Nova can schedule a student for their Behind the Wheel (BTW) lessons. Students will receive a confirmation email from Nova for each scheduled lesson.

INSTRUCTION PERMIT: Students must have a valid driver’s instruction permit with them any time they intend to drive a vehicle. If a student does not have their permit with them on a lesson day, the lesson will be cancelled and a $45 rescheduling fee will apply.

FOOTWEAR POLICY: Students may not wear sandals or open-toed shoes of any kind during driving lessons. Shoes must cover both the toes and the heels of the student. No high heels of any kind are permitted during Behind-the-Wheel lessons. If the student fails to meet these requirements, the lesson(s) will be recorded as cancelled, and a $45 cancellation fee will be incurred.

CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Use of cell phones and/or any other portable electronic devices by students during BTW lessons is strictly prohibited. Students are asked to silence/turn off their cell phone and/or any other portable electronic devices during driving lessons. Students who do not follow these guidelines will be excused from the lesson and will not receive an attendance credit for the lesson.

INSTRUCTOR'S DISCRETION: Please note that parallel parking or highway driving skills are taught at the instructor's discretion. Students may ask their instructor any questions they may have about learning these skills.

CANCELLATION NOTICE FOR DRIVING LESSONS: All cancellations of driving lessons must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the lesson’s start time. Students who do not cancel their lessons at least 24 hours in advance will be charged a $45 cancellation fee per every two hours scheduled. Cancellations can be made via the student’s Nova web portal account (for which all students receive a login and password when they first sign up for classes with Nova), or by speaking directly to a member of the office on the phone. Text messages, emails, or voicemails left for Nova staff are not sufficient notice, and are not accepted as cancellation notifications.

All canceled lessons must be rescheduled for the student to complete the required driving time mandated by Secretary of State.

IN-LESSON CANCELLATION: BTW lessons begin when the instructor arrives at the location of the lesson at the scheduled time. The instructor reserves the right to cancel the lesson at any time if they are concerned that the student is in any way impaired, and would therefore be a danger to themselves and others if allowed to drive. A lesson may also be cancelled if the student chooses not to take the lesson, is not wearing adequate footwear, or if the student refuses to follow the instructor’s directions (especially and including warnings about a student’s reckless behavior.) Nova’s obligations to the student for that lesson shall be considered fulfilled if it is cancelled under any of these conditions.

If the instructor decides to stop a lesson while it is in progress due to lack of adequate footwear, the student’s cognitive impairment, or failure to follow directions, Nova will consider that lesson as fulfilled. The student will not owe a cancellation fee, but will not receive a refund for the lesson. Credit for driving lessons is valid for one year from the purchase date. If a full year passes before the student makes up the lesson, they will have to pay full price for any additional driving lessons.

All canceled lessons must be rescheduled for the student to complete the required driving time mandated by Secretary of State.

TRANSPORTATION TO THE ROAD TEST: While BTW instruction is private, if a student chooses to go to their Road Test with no lesson attached, they may be scheduled to ride with an instructor who is going to the Secretary of State with another student. Nova will provide home pick-up on the day of the Road Test only if it is combined with a lesson. If a student will travel on their own to the SOS office, they will be given a time to meet a Nova instructor at the SOS office or at the public transportation station nearest to the SOS.

ROAD TEST AT THE SECRETARY OF STATE’S OFFICE: Two hours are allotted for the road test including drop off. Any additional time spent at the Secretary of State due to delays in line or other factors, including the need to resolve documentation, eligibility, or license issues will be charged at a rate of $50/hour. Upon departure from the Secretary of State, students can choose to be dropped off at the nearest CTA transportation station, rather than at their home, if they wish to avoid incurring the $50/hour charge if the total time spent for the road test exceeds two hours. Students can choose to reschedule the road test for another day in order to resolve any issues preventing them from taking the test, but they will owe Nova a $45 rescheduling fee.

PLEASE NOTE: If, on the day of a student’s scheduled road test, an instructor determines that a student is not a safe driver, the student will not be allowed to take the road test. A BTW lesson will take place instead.

BTW LESSONS COMPLETION DEADLINE: All BTW lessons must be completed within one year from the purchase date. If a student does not complete their eight BTW sessions within one year, the remaining hours will be billed at our regular BTW hourly rate.

REFUNDS: Students have 30 days from the package purchase date to request a refund. A 30% processing fee is applied to all program refunds made during this 30-day period. (NDS will process refund requests made prior to the first lesson at their discretion on a case-by-case basis.) If a student decides to stop all lessons with NDS after the 30-day deadline has passed, payment cannot be refunded. However, the program credit remains available for one year from its purchase date. Students may transfer the credit to a friend or family member.

WHEN IS A STUDENT ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THEIR ROAD TEST (DRIVER'S LICENSE TEST)? For students who are under the age of 18:
  1. The student must be at least 16 years old.
  2. The student must have completed 30 hours of classroom study and six/eight hours of Behind the Wheel driving lessons in order for NDS to send the student’s certification to the Secretary of State’s office.
  3. If the classroom portion of the program was completed in a CPS school, NDS can determine whether the school sent certification to the Secretary of State by looking up the student’s permit in the SOS database.
  4. NDS sends certification to the Secretary of State’s office upon a student’s completion of their required classes and lessons. NOTE: The Secretary of State’s office may take up to three weeks to process certification once it has been submitted.
  5. The student must have held their permit for at least nine months, and may not have any moving violations on their record. Any moving violation conviction will result in a nine-month waiting period beyond the initial nine-month Instruction Permit period before the student may apply for a driver’s license.
If these three requirements are met, then the teen is eligible to take their road test. ROAD TEST DOCUMENT CHECKLIST Students must bring these documents to their road test:
  • Instruction Permit that shows the student's current address
  • 50-Hour Driving Log
  • Valid Illinois State I.D. that shows the student's current address
If the student does not have an Illinois State I.D., the must bring all four of the following documents (original documents only; the SOS will not accept photocopies):
  • Student’s U.S. Birth Certificate or valid U.S Passport
  • Student’s Social Security Card (must be the original card, signed)
  • Student’s School ID, or any picture ID with the student's name on it
  • Proof of the student’s home address with student's name on it (e.g.: official school transcripts that list the home address, a bank statement with the student's name and address on it, the student’s Social Security card if the label with the student’s home address on it is still attached).
If the student is missing one or more of the documents listed above, they should check this complete list of acceptable documents at to find acceptable substitutes. We encourage students to bring more documents in case one does not qualify. A full list of acceptable documents can be found on the second page of this PDF. For students who are 18, 19, or 20 years of age: The student must have proof of completion of a standard 30-hour Driver’s Education course in high school or elsewhere, or they may take NDS's six-hour Adult Driver’s Education (ADE) class, as required by the state of Illinois. Students who enroll in ADE as part of a package with Behind The Wheel instruction and Written Exam preparation will receive a $40 discount. The day and time of the class becomes flexible if there are more than three students enrolled in the same six-hour ADE session. If there are fewer than three students enrolled, the ADE session will be scheduled by NDS. NOTE: Before traveling to the SOS to take the road test, license applicants should check the Secretary of State’s website to ensure that their information has been entered into the SOS database. Go to this site and enter the Instruction Permit identification (with dashes) to verify. Alternately, students or parents may call the Office of the Secretary of State:
  • 312-793-1010
  • Press 3 to reach an agent
  • Provide the Instruction Permit identification to the agent.
