Emergency/Maintenance Vehicles

  • If you see an emergency vehicle (such as a police car, fire truck, or ambulance) or a maintenance vehicle parked on the side of the road with its flashing lights activated, you should follow the same procedure as you would for a construction zone:
    • Slow down
    • Make a lane change to leave a “buffer zone” lane between your car and the emergency vehicle
    • Proceed with caution.
  • If a lane change is not possible, reduce your speed and proceed with caution.
  • As always, you are responsible for the safe operation of your vehicle.
  • Illinois law prohibits photography and the use of wireless/cellphones within 500 feet of an emergency scene, except in certain circumstances.
