Construction Zones

  • Motorists must obey construction zone speed limits 24 hours a day, 7 days week, even if they don’t see construction or maintenance workers.
  • Workers sometimes complete projects in the middle of the night or during other periods when traffic volumes are low.
  • By following the speed limit, you will be prepared if a worker enters your line of sight unexpectedly.
  • In addition, you’ll avoid an expensive traffic ticket.
  • According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the fines for speeding in a construction or maintenance work zone are:
    • Minimum of $375 for the first offense
    • Minimum of $1000 for the second offense
  • If the second offense is within two years of the first offense, the Secretary of State will suspend the violator’s driver’s license for a period of 90 days.
