Construction Zones
Motorists must obey construction zone speed limits 24 hours a day, 7 days week, even if they don’t see construction or maintenance workers.
Workers sometimes complete projects in the middle of the night or during other periods when traffic volumes are low.
By following the speed limit, you will be prepared if a worker enters your line of sight unexpectedly.
In addition, you’ll avoid an expensive traffic ticket.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the fines for speeding in a construction or maintenance work zone are:
- Minimum of $375 for the first offense
- Minimum of $1000 for the second offense
If the second offense is within two years of the first offense, the Secretary of State will suspend the violator’s driver’s license for a period of 90 days.
