- Inertia causes objects in motion to remain in motion (in a straight line) unless acted upon by an outside force. Similarly, objects at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts on them. When you drive, the people and objects in your car move at the same speed as your car. Seat belts help drivers overcome the effects of inertia by allowing vehicle occupants to slow down more gradually in the event of a collision.
