- Reduce your speed to achieve better traction. Hydroplaning, which occurs when a car’s tires skim over a layer of water that builds up in front of the tire, can occur at speeds as low as 30 mph. To avoid hydroplaning, travel below 30 mph in the rain.
- If you go into a skid while hydroplaning, ease off of the accelerator pedal and try to regain control of the vehicle by steering in the direction that you want to go.
