  • If you can’t avoid a collision, try to strike something with some “give,” such as a hedge or a snowbank, rather than a tree, a light pole, or a bridge support. If you do need to strike a non-moving object, try to strike it at a glancing blow rather than head-on.

If a collision is unavoidable, driving into a hedge is preferable to hitting a person or another car. In all cases, though, drivers are financially responsible for bodily injury and property damage that they cause while operating a vehicle, even if the property damage is the result of avoiding a more-serious collision.
