  • Before we look at the factors involved in a reduction in a car’s kinetic energy through braking, let’s look at the factors that affect a car’s total stopping distance. A car’s stopping distance consists of the following:
  • Perception Distance (the distance and time it takes you to realize that a hazard exists)
  • Reaction Distance (the distance and time it takes you to switch pedals from the accelerator to the brake)
  • Braking Distance (the distance and time it takes the vehicle’s braking system to bring the car to a complete stop)
