Animals: Strategies for Reducing Risk

Small Animals

  • If you see a small animal (such as a squirrel or a raccoon) in your traffic lane, stop if you can do so safely.
  • If you determine that you might collide with another vehicle (or another vehicle might rear-end you) while attempting to stop for the small animal, continue in your path of travel.
  • In the best-case scenario, the animal will make a quick decision to move out of your path of travel.
  • Above all, make a decision that protects you, your passengers, and other humans on the road from injury or death.
