DOCUMENTS: All registration documents must be turned in to Nova before any teen can start their Behind-The-Wheel lessons.


SCHEDULING BEHIND-THE-WHEEL LESSONS: All enrollment and registration forms must be turned in, payment must be made in full, and the student must have received their permit from the Secretary of State’s (SOS) office before Nova can schedule a student for their Behind the Wheel (BTW) lessons. Students will receive a confirmation email from Nova for each scheduled lesson.


INSTRUCTION PERMIT: Students must have a valid driver’s instruction permit with them any time they intend to drive a vehicle. If a student does not have their permit with them on a lesson day, the lesson will be cancelled and a $45 rescheduling fee will apply.


FOOTWEAR POLICY: Students may not wear sandals or open-toed shoes of any kind during driving lessons. Shoes must cover both the toes and the heels of the student. No high heels of any kind are permitted during Behind-the-Wheel lessons. If the student fails to meet these requirements, the lesson(s) will be recorded as cancelled, and a $45 cancellation fee will be incurred.


CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Use of cell phones and/or any other portable electronic devices by students during BTW lessons is strictly prohibited. Students are asked to silence/turn off their cell phone and/or any other portable electronic devices during driving lessons. Students who do not follow these guidelines will be excused from the lesson and will not receive an attendance credit for the lesson.


INSTRUCTOR’S DISCRETION: Please note that parallel parking or highway driving skills are taught at the instructor’s discretion. Students may ask their instructor any questions they may have about learning these skills.


CANCELLATION NOTICE FOR DRIVING LESSONS: All cancellations of driving lessons must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the lesson’s start time. Students who do not cancel their lessons at least 24 hours in advance will be charged a $45 cancellation fee per every two hours scheduled. Cancellations can be made via the student’s Nova web portal account (for which all students receive a login and password when they first sign up for classes with Nova), or by speaking directly to a member of the office on the phone. Text messages, emails, or voicemails left for Nova staff are not sufficient notice, and are not accepted as cancellation notifications.


All canceled lessons must be rescheduled for the student to complete the required driving time mandated by Secretary of State.


IN-LESSON CANCELLATION: BTW lessons begin when the instructor arrives at the location of the lesson at the scheduled time. The instructor reserves the right to cancel the lesson at any time if they are concerned that the student is in any way impaired, and would therefore be a danger to themselves and others if allowed to drive. A lesson may also be cancelled if the student chooses not to take the lesson, is not wearing adequate footwear, or if the student refuses to follow the instructor’s directions (especially and including warnings about a student’s reckless behavior.) Nova’s obligations to the student for that lesson shall be considered fulfilled if it is cancelled under any of these conditions.


If the instructor decides to stop a lesson while it is in progress due to lack of adequate footwear, the student’s cognitive impairment, or failure to follow directions, Nova will consider that lesson as fulfilled. The student will not owe a cancellation fee, but will not receive a refund for the lesson. Credit for driving lessons is valid for one year from the purchase date. If a full year passes before the student makes up the lesson, they will have to pay full price for any additional driving lessons.

TRANSPORTATION TO THE ROAD TEST: While BTW instruction is private, if a student chooses to go to their Road Test with no lesson attached, they may be scheduled to ride with an instructor who is going to the Secretary of State with another student. Nova will provide home pick-up on the day of the Road Test only if it is combined with a lesson. If a student will travel on their own to the SOS office, they will be given a time to meet a Nova instructor at the SOS office or at the public transportation station nearest to the SOS.


ROAD TEST AT THE SECRETARY OF STATE’S OFFICE: Two hours are allotted for the road test including drop off. Any additional time spent at the Secretary of State due to delays in line or other factors, including the need to resolve documentation, eligibility, or license issues will be charged at a rate of $50/hour. Upon departure from the Secretary of State, students can choose to be dropped off at the nearest CTA transportation station, rather than at their home, if they wish to avoid incurring the $50/hour charge if the total time spent for the road test exceeds two hours. Students can choose to reschedule the road test for another day in order to resolve any issues preventing them from taking the test, but they will owe Nova a $45 rescheduling fee.


PLEASE NOTE: If, on the day of a student’s scheduled road test, an instructor determines that a student is not a safe driver, the student will not be allowed to take the road test. A BTW lesson will take place instead.  


BTW LESSONS COMPLETION DEADLINE: All BTW lessons must be completed within one year from the purchase date. If a student does not complete their eight BTW sessions within one year, the remaining hours will be billed at our regular BTW hourly rate.


REFUNDS: Students have 30 days from the package purchase date to request a refund. A 30% processing fee is applied to all program refunds made during this 30-day period. (NDS will process refund requests made prior to the first lesson at their discretion on a case-by-case basis.) If a student decides to stop all lessons with NDS after the 30-day deadline has passed, payment cannot be refunded. However, the program credit remains available for one year from its purchase date. Students may transfer the credit to a friend or family member.


PAYMENT REFUSAL/LACK OF FUNDS: In the event that the method of payment is returned for insufficient funds, the student or parent(s) will be responsible for the entire balance, as well as for any bank fees incurred by NDS due to payment refusal. In the event that the balance is not paid in full by 90 days, the student or parent(s) will be responsible for all billed charges, collection costs, and reasonable attorney fees.
